Valve selection guide

Gate Valve vs Globe Valve: Isolation or Flow Control?

For preliminary selection, use a gate valve when the duty is normally fully open or fully closed. Consider a globe valve when manual throttling is required and the resulting pressure loss is acceptable. Neither choice should be finalized from valve type alone: confirm the process conditions, specified construction and project requirements.

Short answer: gate valves are generally intended for on/off isolation, not routine throttling. Globe valves are commonly used for throttling, but their pressure drop and the exact trim and service conditions must be evaluated. For frequent or automatic control, have the control duty sized and reviewed as a control-valve application.

The practical difference

Selection questionGate valveGlobe valve
Typical dutyStart/stop isolation, normally operated fully open or fully closed.Shutoff and manual flow adjustment, subject to the valve design and service.
Part-open operationNot generally intended for routine throttling; partial opening can cause vibration and wear.More suited to throttling than a gate valve, but suitability depends on flow, pressure drop, trim and operating frequency.
Flow pathA fully open gate design can provide a relatively direct, low-obstruction path; confirm the actual bore and design. The flow changes direction through the body and seat region; pressure loss is generally higher than for a straight-through full-open gate design.
What to checkIsolation duty, required shutoff, installation envelope, end connections, actuation and specified tests.Required adjustment range, pressure drop, flow conditions, trim, operating frequency and specified shutoff.

These are general type-level distinctions, not guaranteed performance for every construction. Actual pressure loss, shutoff and suitability must be confirmed for the selected valve and service.

A simple decision path

1. Is the valve mainly for isolation?

If the operating procedure is normally fully open or fully closed, a gate valve may be a candidate. State how often it will operate and what shutoff requirement the specification calls for.

2. Must an operator adjust flow manually?

A globe valve may be a candidate for manual throttling. Confirm expected flow range, pressure drop, operating frequency and whether the specified valve is intended for that duty.

3. Is flow controlled automatically or continuously?

Do not assume a manual isolation or globe valve is an appropriate control valve. Provide the process data needed for sizing and ask the project engineer or supplier to review the control requirement.

4. Does the project specify a valve type?

Follow the approved line list, datasheet and project specification. A type comparison does not authorize substitution or establish code compliance.

Information to include in a valve RFQ

To compare offers on a like-for-like basis, send the buyer-issued requirements rather than relying on a generic type description:

  • Valve type, intended duty and quantity; include the line list or equipment tag if available.
  • Nominal size and the project-specified pressure class or rating—do not infer conversions between standards.
  • Process medium, design and operating pressure, design and operating temperature, and any relevant flow or throttling data.
  • Body and trim material requirements, end connection and facing, operation or actuator requirements, and installation constraints.
  • Applicable design, inspection and test standards with the contractually required editions; identify required inspection, certificates and documents.
  • For replacement, provide the nameplate/model, existing drawings or dimensions, photographs and any known service history.

Where the data is incomplete, mark the open items for technical clarification instead of guessing ratings, materials or compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Can a gate valve be used to regulate flow?

Gate valves are generally intended for fully open or fully closed operation, not routine throttling. Confirm any proposed exception with the exact valve manufacturer and project engineer.

Does a globe valve always have higher pressure loss?

Globe-valve flow paths generally create more pressure loss than a straight-through, fully open gate-valve design. The actual value depends on construction and operating conditions; use the selected valve’s verified data for sizing.

Can I substitute a globe valve for a gate valve?

Not solely because both can provide shutoff. Review the approved duty, pressure-temperature limits, materials, end connections, dimensions, operation, test requirements and project approval before proposing a substitution.

What should I send to request a recommendation?

Provide the valve list or tag, size, medium, design and operating pressure and temperature, required materials, connection, operation, applicable specification and edition, quantity, and inspection/document requirements. For a replacement, add the existing model and available drawings or dimensions.
